Turning Every Screening
into a Turning Point

Community-based NCD risk assessment that finds disease early — and turns findings into action

Most non-communicable diseases announce themselves silently — building in the body for years before any symptom appears. By the time a person feels ill, the disease is often advanced, the treatment complex, and the cost immense. Early detection changes this story entirely. At the Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center, every screening is designed not just as a test, but as a complete wellness encounter — a turning point that sets someone on a path toward health rather than crisis.

What This Program Does

Finding Disease Before It Finds You

Community-based Screening and Early Risk Detection is the Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center's first line of intervention — the program that turns awareness into action at the earliest possible moment. Through regular screening camps at the Center and mobile outreaches into schools, markets, churches, and villages, the program brings NCD risk assessment directly to communities that have little or no access to preventive health services.

Every screening encounter is designed as a complete wellness experience. Participants do not simply receive a result and leave — they receive education about what the result means, counseling on lifestyle modifications, referral into the Center's care pathway if required, and encouragement to return. A positive finding is not an ending; it is a beginning.

Results flow directly into the Center's diagnostics laboratory and electronic records system, ensuring that anyone identified at risk enters a coordinated care pathway immediately — not weeks later after a lost referral slip.

What We Screen For

A Comprehensive Risk Assessment in One Visit

Each screening visit covers a core panel of NCD risk markers — designed to be comprehensive yet efficient, and deliverable in community settings without a hospital laboratory. Advanced markers are available at the Center's diagnostics lab for participants flagged at elevated risk.

🩸Blood PressureDetection of hypertension — the silent killer affecting 1 in 4 Kenyan adults
🍬Blood GlucoseFasting and random glucose to identify diabetes and pre-diabetes early
⚖️BMI & WaistBody mass index and waist circumference — key indicators of metabolic risk
💉CholesterolTotal cholesterol and lipid profile screening for cardiovascular risk
🫁RespiratoryPeak flow assessment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease risk
🔬Cancer MarkersBasic breast, cervical, and oral cancer screening with referral for further investigation
How It Works

A Screening That Becomes a Wellness Journey

1

Welcome & Registration

Participants are warmly welcomed, registered, and given a brief orientation to the session. Community health promoters are present to answer questions and ensure no one feels intimidated or rushed.

2

Comprehensive Screening Panel

Trained health workers conduct the full screening panel — blood pressure, glucose, BMI, cholesterol, and basic cancer markers — using calibrated, portable equipment suitable for community settings.

3

Results & Counseling

Results are explained in plain language in the participant's preferred local language. Those with normal results receive health education and a follow-up schedule. Those with elevated results receive immediate counseling and a clear next step.

4

Referral & Care Pathway Entry

High-risk participants are referred directly into the Center's diagnostics laboratory or consultation service — with a warm handoff, not just a slip of paper. No one leaves without a clear plan.

5

Follow-up & Community Tracking

Community health promoters follow up with screened participants — particularly those referred — to ensure the care pathway is being followed and barriers to access are identified and addressed.

Where We Work

Screening That Comes to the Community

The Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center runs regular screening camps at the Center in Khumusalaba, supplemented by mobile outreach teams that take screening directly into the spaces where communities gather. Distance and transport should never determine whether someone learns their blood pressure is dangerously high.
