Empowering communities through accessible, joyful, and culturally rooted prevention
Prevention is the most powerful investment a community can make. Non-communicable diseases build silently through years of unaddressed risk. At the Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center, we intervene early and boldly — in schools, markets, churches, and homes — making healthy choices easier, more joyful, and deeply communal.
"Prevention is not a warning — it is a way of life. When communities own their health, they become unstoppable."
In Kenya today, the vast majority of NCDs — heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and many cancers — are preventable. Yet communities are rarely given the tools, knowledge, or environment to act before illness takes hold. Our prevention pillar exists to change that reality.
We do not lecture communities about what they should do. We walk alongside them — designing programs that are joyful rather than fearful, social rather than clinical, and deeply rooted in local food systems, languages, and traditions. A wellness session at the Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center is as much a community celebration as it is a health intervention.
Our programs are delivered both at the Center in Khumusalaba and through extensive mobile outreaches that bring prevention directly into the spaces where people live, worship, work, and learn. Every screening becomes a full wellness experience. Every garden becomes a classroom. Every fitness session becomes a reason to return.
Each program addresses a specific root cause of NCDs — together forming a comprehensive prevention ecosystem that reaches communities at every stage of life.
01
Regular NCD risk assessments — blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, BMI, and basic cancer markers — at the Center and through mobile medical camps. Every screening is designed as a complete wellness experience: results feed directly into the diagnostics laboratory and care pathway, while participants receive education, nutrition counseling, and encouragement. We turn every screening into a turning point.

Indoor and outdoor gyms, sports facilities, and instructor-led sessions — aerobics, yoga, walking clubs, and adapted team sports. The Center hosts inter-community sports tournaments and organized sporting events that galvanize entire neighborhoods around healthy movement. These programs extend into community outreaches, making fitness a joyful, social experience that builds lifelong habits and reduces NCD risk across all age groups.

Demonstration nutri-gardens at the Center, plus support for household and school edible gardens. Cooking classes, nutrition counseling, and garden-to-table activities teach affordable, locally available balanced diets — while generating income opportunities and promoting food security. Healthy eating is reclaimed as an everyday birthright, not a luxury reserved for the few.

Workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions delivered in multipurpose rooms and outdoor amphitheaters — and extended into schools, churches, and community gatherings. Topics include NCD risks, healthy behaviours, and mental wellness, delivered through baraza-style dialogues in simple local languages. Active involvement of faith leaders, teachers, and community elders ensures the message takes root and spreads organically.

Tobacco use, harmful alcohol consumption, and substance use are among the most significant modifiable risk factors for NCDs. Our programs combine community dialogues, peer education, school-based campaigns, and individual counseling to address these risks honestly and without stigma. We work with families, faith communities, and local leaders to shift norms and create supportive environments for healthier choices at every age.

Weekly mixed-age group sessions combining physical activity, nutrition education, storytelling, and social connection in the Center's serene outdoor spaces. Health habits are most powerful when shared across generations. Grandparents and grandchildren walk together, cook together, and learn together — strengthening family bonds while building a community culture of wellness that endures long after any single intervention has ended.
Learn more →Prevention is not just a moral imperative — it is an economic and strategic one. Every shilling invested in preventing an NCD saves many times that in treatment costs and lost productivity. The data is unambiguous: early action transforms lives and communities.
Over 80% of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes can be prevented through lifestyle changes and early screening
Up to 70% of people with NCDs in Kenya are undiagnosed — our screening programs close this dangerous gap
Prevention investments return up to 3 times their value in reduced treatment costs and fewer hospitalisations
One family that changes its health habits influences an entire village. Prevention has no ceiling.
Our prevention programs are not confined to walls. While the Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center in Khumusalaba serves as the anchor — with its nutri-gardens, gyms, amphitheaters, and screening facilities — prevention truly happens wherever people are.
Our mobile health units and trained community health promoters extend the reach of every program into the spaces that matter most: schools, markets, places of worship, and community gatherings. We meet people in the language they speak, with a message that resonates with their daily lives and local context.
