Movement is Medicine

Making fitness joyful, social, and woven into everyday community life

Physical inactivity is one of the leading modifiable risk factors for non-communicable diseases globally — and in Western Kenya, it is rising fast as urbanisation, sedentary work, and changing lifestyles replace the natural activity of farming and rural life. The Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center's Physical Activity and Fitness Programs make movement accessible, enjoyable, and communal — because the best exercise is the kind people actually do, together.

What This Program Does

Fitness as a Community Celebration

At the Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center, physical activity is never presented as a chore or a punishment for unhealthy living. It is celebrated as one of the most joyful and powerful medicines available — free, social, and available to everyone regardless of age, fitness level, or ability.

The Center's indoor and outdoor gyms, open sports fields, and walking circuits provide the infrastructure. Trained fitness instructors and community sports leaders provide the energy. Regular inter-community sports tournaments, friendly leagues, and organized sporting events bring entire neighborhoods together around healthy competition — creating occasions that are as much about belonging as they are about exercise.

Mobile fitness outreaches take structured sessions directly into schools, markets, and community gatherings — ensuring that those who cannot reach the Center can still access the program. Every session ends with brief health education and encouragement to return.

Why It Matters

Inactivity is a Silent Epidemic

The World Health Organization identifies physical inactivity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality — responsible for approximately 3.2 million deaths annually. In Kenya, rising rates of sedentary behaviour are directly linked to the growing NCD burden, particularly cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Regular moderate physical activity reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke by up to 35%, type 2 diabetes by up to 50%, and depression by up to 30%. It is one of the most cost-effective public health interventions available — yet it requires no drug, no hospital, and no prescription. It requires only opportunity, encouragement, and community.

That is precisely what the Center provides.
