The Right Answer
at the Right Moment

Modern on-site diagnostics that catch NCDs early and track them precisely — where it matters most

In rural Western Kenya, the gap between a person developing a serious NCD and receiving a diagnosis can be years. Not because care is unavailable, but because diagnostics are. Without a reliable, affordable, local laboratory, elevated blood sugar, silent hypertension, and early-stage kidney disease remain invisible — until a crisis forces an emergency that could have been prevented. The Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center's Diagnostics and Monitoring Laboratory closes that gap permanently.

What This Program Does

Precision That Changes Outcomes

The Diagnostics and Monitoring Laboratory is the clinical backbone of the Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center's Management pillar. It provides affordable, accurate, same-day diagnostic services for the full range of NCD risk markers and chronic disease monitoring parameters — serving both people who visit the Center and outreach samples collected during mobile medical camps in surrounding communities.

What makes this laboratory different is not just what it tests — it is what happens next. Every result feeds directly into the patient's digital care record and flows immediately to the clinical team. High-risk findings trigger same-day consultation appointments. Monitoring results inform medication adjustments and care plan reviews. Nothing falls through the cracks. No result goes unactioned.

For complex cases requiring specialist investigations — advanced imaging, biopsy, genetic testing — the laboratory maintains warm referral pathways to county and national referral hospitals, with clear communication protocols that ensure the patient is expected, their records are transmitted, and continuity of care is maintained throughout.

What We Test

A Comprehensive Diagnostic Panel

The laboratory covers the core diagnostic and monitoring needs for Kenya's most prevalent NCDs — with capacity for expanded panels as the Center grows. All testing is conducted using calibrated, quality-assured equipment by trained laboratory technicians.

🩸Blood GlucoseFasting, post-prandial, HbA1c — for diabetes diagnosis and ongoing glycaemic monitoring
💉Lipid ProfileTotal cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides — essential for cardiovascular risk assessment
🫁Kidney FunctionCreatinine, eGFR, urea — for chronic kidney disease monitoring in hypertension and diabetes
❤️Cardiac MarkersECG, troponin, BNP — baseline and monitoring for cardiovascular disease management
🔬Full Blood CountAnaemia screening and complete haematological assessment supporting cancer and chronic disease care
🫀Liver FunctionALT, AST, bilirubin — critical for patients on long-term NCD medications that require liver monitoring
🧬Thyroid FunctionTSH, T3, T4 — thyroid disorders are a significant and often undiagnosed driver of metabolic NCDs
📊UrinalysisProtein, glucose, microalbumin — early markers for diabetic kidney disease and hypertensive organ damage
How It Works

From Sample to Care Plan — Seamlessly

1

Sample Collection

Blood and urine samples collected on-site by trained phlebotomists, or received from outreach mobile camp collections — all tracked by patient ID and timestamped on arrival.

2

Analysis & Quality Assurance

Samples processed using calibrated automated and semi-automated analysers. All results are reviewed by a laboratory technician before release, with internal quality controls run on every batch.

3

Digital Record Integration

Results uploaded directly to the patient's electronic health record — accessible to the clinical team in real time, with automated alerts for critical values requiring urgent review.

4

Clinical Action

Normal results trigger scheduled follow-up. Abnormal results trigger same-day clinical review. Critical results trigger immediate escalation. No result is filed and forgotten.

5

Patient Communication

Results explained to patients in plain language by a trained counselor or clinician — with written summaries provided and follow-up actions clearly communicated before the patient leaves.
