When Generations Walk
Together, Communities Heal

Weekly clubs where grandparents and grandchildren build health habits that last a lifetime

The most durable health habits are not those adopted from a pamphlet or a clinic — they are the ones woven into family routines, shared stories, and community rituals. Intergenerational Healthy Living Clubs are built on this insight: that when children, parents, and elders move, cook, and learn together, something more powerful than a health program is created. A culture of wellness is born — and it outlasts any single intervention.

What This Program Does

Health Habits That Cross Every Generation

Intergenerational Healthy Living Clubs bring together people of all ages — children, adults, and elders — in weekly sessions that combine physical activity, nutrition education, storytelling, and social connection in the Kenya NCD Resource and Support Center's serene outdoor spaces and community venues.

Each session is designed to be joyful, participatory, and culturally rooted. Elders share traditional knowledge about food, farming, and community wellbeing. Young people bring energy, curiosity, and new perspectives. The exchange across generations creates a learning environment richer than any classroom — and bonds that extend the program's influence into homes and daily life.

Clubs run both at the Center and in community spaces — schools, churches, and open grounds — ensuring that participation does not require travel. No fitness level, age, or background is a barrier to joining. The only requirement is a willingness to show up and participate.

Why It Matters

The Deepest Roots Grow Between Generations

Health interventions that target individuals in isolation have limited reach. The most powerful determinant of a person's long-term health behavior is the culture and habits of the people around them — family, friends, and community. Intergenerational programming harnesses this social reality deliberately.

Research consistently shows that children who observe and participate in healthy practices with their families are significantly more likely to maintain those practices into adulthood. Elders who remain physically and socially active have lower rates of cognitive decline, depression, and NCD complications. The benefits flow in both directions across the generational bridge.

In African cultural contexts, intergenerational learning is not a novel concept — it is the traditional vehicle for transmitting values, knowledge, and practice. The Healthy Living Clubs honor that tradition, updating it for the health challenges of the 21st century.
